The survey had an excellent rate of response with 231, or almost 70% of our membership participating. Of the 231 members that responded, 74% are currently working as Veterinary Technologists. The most common reason stated for leaving the profession was still that wages are too low. This is unchanged since the 2008 wage survey.
Not surprisingly, the majority of Techs are employed in mixed animal practices with small animal practice coming in at a close second.
Comparison between the 2010 and 2008 wage survey was difficult because the questions have been changed slightly to allow for clearer responses and therefore more useful information. We are happy to report, an increase in the top end of small animal technologist's hourly wage and an overall increase in hourly wages for technologists working in mixed animal settings.
Hourly wages reported in the 2010 survey
Small Animal $10.50/hr – $27.00/hr
Average: $18.75/hr
Large Animal $14.00/hr – $16.00/hr
Average: $15.00/hr
55% of Saskatchewan Tech’s are called back to work afterhours but only 11% are actually scheduled to be on call
The second most common reason (19%) for a Tech to leave the profession is to take time off to raise a family
The majority (10%) of respondents have graduated from a Veterinary Technology program within the last two years
The most common starting wage for a Tech in Saskatchewan is between $13.00 and $14.00 per hour
The majority of respondents (18%) work in a clinic that employs only one Veterinarian
There is much more information regarding the SAVT’s second online wage survey including information such as average starting wages, comparison of wages to years of experience, benefits, etc.
