Stress Pig Handling: Taking Pig Handling from Battlefield To Ballroom
Nancy Lidster, BSAg

Pigs’ brains, emotions and need for safety drive their responses to handlers. Handling problems occur when we try to force movement with no regard for pigs’ mental and emotional needs. Pig responses that interfere with movement and contribute to injuries, meat quality losses, and stress related performance and productivity losses are all fear responses. If we set up our requests in ways that make pigs feel safe doing what we want, moving them becomes almost effortless. The challenge: we have to overcome our own instincts and change the way we think about the approach to process if we are to move pigs more effectively. Proceedings
