Poultry Barn Tour and Mock Inspection Wet Lab

During the tour we'll be visiting the Poultry Centre on the U of S campus.

The Poultry Centre is the base for teaching and research in Poultry Science in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science. It consists of approximately 3000m² of space, and includes a hatchery, Gnotobiotic Animal Research facility, brooding and rearing barn, adult barn and a turkey research facility. The Poultry Centre uses broilers, White Leghorns, pure chicken breeds and commercial turkeys. The total bird usage ranges with a maximum capacity of approximately 43,000 birds per year.

Karen Schwean-Lardner is the Manager of the Poultry Research and Teaching Unit within the Department of Animal and Poultry Science at the University of Saskatchewan. She has immense knowledge of poultry welfare, behavior, management, and production systems. We are very pleased that she will be leading us on a tour of the Poultry Centre and describing her research. This includes laying hen cage systems and feeding trials, broiler lighting trials, and turkey beak and toe trimming trials.

Erin de Coninck Smith will be conducting the "mock" barn inspection portion of the wet lab. This will include the Animal Care Guidelines and Rating Form, and the Start Clean Stay Clean Evaluation Form for layers. Erin is employed as an On-Farm Food Safety Inspector with Egg Farmers of Canada, which is the federal egg marketing agency. There are 73 layer producers and 45 pullet producers in Saskatchewan under her control.
