  • Patient Monitoring Recommendations Dr. Steve Haskins

This module will cover the vital signs and other parameters that veterinarians and technicians should monitor for patients receiving fluid therapy. Dr. Haskins will discuss monitoring fluid therapy in anesthetic and surgical patients, as well as interpreting the clinical findings.

  • Medical Case Studies Dr. Elisa Mazzaferro

This module, presented as interactive case studies by Dr. Mazzaferro, will cover the appropriate use of fluid therapy for common medical cases, including diabetic ketoacidosis, renal disease, and heart failure.

  • Critical Care Case Studies Dr. Lisa Powell

This module will cover the vital signs and other parameters that veterinarians and technicians should monitor for patients receiving fluid therapy. Dr. Haskins will discuss monitoring fluid therapy in anesthetic and surgical patients, as well as interpreting the clinical findings.

  • Anesthesia Basics Dr. Elizabeth Martinez

This introductory module will cover the basics of anesthesia. Dr. Martinez will review anesthesia and its effects on tissue perfusion. She will discuss cardiovascular, central nervous system, and respiratory depression. She will also cover the goal of anesthesia, which is the anesthetic triad of muscle relaxation, unconsciousness, and analgesia.

  • Pre-Anesthetic Examination Dr. Nancy Brock

This module will cover the pre-anesthetic examination, including the importance of a thorough history and complete physical exam. Dr. Brock will discuss the American Society of Anesthesiologists patient status classifications and individualized testing recommendations for juvenile, adult, and geriatric patients, as well as patients with specific diseases.

  • Monitoring During Anesthetic Maintenance & Recovery Dr. Nora Matthews

This module will cover the parameters to monitor during anesthesia. Dr. Matthews will review the value of good record keeping. She will discuss monitoring techniques for heart and respiratory rate, temperature, blood oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and exhaled carbon dioxide. She will also review important monitoring considerations during recovery.

  • Inhalant Anesthesia Equipment Considerations Dr. Tamara Grubb

This module will cover anesthesia machines, breathing systems, vaporizers, and mechanical ventilators. Dr. Grubb will review how to check your machine daily and troubleshoot common problems, including leaks. She will discuss the step-by-step process you should complete with your equipment before you anesthetize each patient.

  • Common Complications of Anesthesia Dr. Berit Fischer

This module will cover common anesthetic complications, including the identification of these complications, their treatment, and preventive measures. Dr. Fischer will cover common respiratory complications, including hypoventilation and hypoxemia; cardiovascular complications, such as hypotension and arrhythmias; hemorrhage; and hypothermia.
