What do you hope to bring to the table or describe great things you are doing:
I would like to bring a number of things to the SAVT Board of Directors – Board experience, a “service” mindset particularly in how SAVT may serve its members’ needs, VT career experience, attention to detail, and a forward planning approach for the organization.

Personal life including pets and hobbies:
I am married and have two (maturing) sons.  I am busy tending to details associated with my career at the WCVM and the Necropsy Facility; my sons’ University, High School and sports related activities; our acreage – the yard and my garden; our rental housing business, and community based activities.  We have two cats, “Speaker” and “Momma Kitty” who are not supposed to live in the house but who have moved in, none the less.   My husband owns a law practice – Ridgway & Co., Prairie Law Group.  On my career front, my latest intrigues is a journey in learning all there is to know about alkaline hydrolysis tissue digesters...and the wonders of this “green” technological approach to decontaminating and handling animal/pet remains.

President-Elect
Annette Lorenz, RVT
Home Province:
Saskatchewan

Education: Graduate of Veterinary Technology Program, SIAST 1993

Work Experience:
After graduating, I took a position in Hinton, AB at a 1 man, mostly small animal practice.  After a year, this girl missed the prairies and cows and took a position with Weir Veterinary Services in Lloydminster, AB.  After 6 months there, the opportunity arose for a feedlot position at a feedlot by Tessier, SK with Animal Management Services (my presumed dream job).  But due to health issues, had to give up the feedlot and landed a position with the Moose Jaw Animal Clinic, a (at the time) 4 doctor, 1 tech mixed animal practice.  The practice has since grown to 6.5 doctors and 4 techs.

Previous Board/ Committee  Experience:
Served on the SAVT from 1995 – 1997 as a CAAHT rep
Sk Polytechnic Veterinary Technology Advisory Committee 2015-present

What do you hope to bring to the table or describe great things you are doing:
I feel I bring to the table a passion for my profession and wanting to pass on that passion to younger techs.

Personal life including pets and hobbies:
Married to husband Rob.  Have 2 kids – Renee who is in second year university and Tyler who is grade 10.  Hobbies include being a sports mom (hockey, ball and football) and a former dance mom!  I enjoy socializing, social media, and reading.  Have 2 fur babies – Buttons, a voluptuous 6 yr old calico and Sophie, a black DSH who enjoys cuddling and playing fetch.

What do you hope to bring to the table or describe great things you are doing:
I hope to help to the SAVT board to promote and grow our profession. I think it’s important to give back to your profession and I’ve been wanting and waiting for the right time to take my turn because this profession and professional association  has supported me for the last 23 years and I’m grateful that I am able to work in a field that I love.

Personal life including pets and hobbies:
I’m married and have seven year old twin boys. They manage to do or say something every day that amazes me….. kids are amazing!!!!  In my non existent free time I enjoy cooking camping socializing music and family gatherings. I don’t have any pets currently but in the future I plan to have at least two maybe three four legged members in my family!! We just need to get a bigger back yard.

Secretary
Wanda Flynn, RVT
Home Province:
Originally Newfoundland; Current Saskatchewan

Education: St. Lawrence/Saint Laurent Animal Care Technology 1991

Work Experience:
I worked in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and finally here in Swift Current as a Small Animal Technologist until September 2015, when I enrolled at the Great Plains College to work toward my Administrative Assistant diploma.  I started working at Cattle Care part-time while I was in school to help pay my bills.  In June 2016 I graduated from the Administrative Assistant with Distinction.  Fortunately, my job at Cattle Care turned full time after graduation!

Previous Board/ Committee  Experience:
Learning something new.

What do you hope to bring to the table or describe great things you are doing:
I have been an animal technologist for 25 years and although for most of those years I have been a part of an association in whatever province I was practicing in.  I have never been in a position to give back some of the support I have received.  Now that I have my Administrative Assistant Diploma I feel that I have something to offer our Association.  It was just last Christmas I received some much needed support from the Board of Directors.  I would love to be able to use my new skills to not only return some of the support I have received but to proudly work with such a positive group of women.  I think this position would allow me to learn and grow within my chosen profession.

Personal life including pets and hobbies:
I was born and raised in Labrador City Newfoundland.  Labrador City is a small Iron Ore mining town in Northern Labrador.  My father owned a lucrative business selling auto parts and ski-doos.  My four brothers stayed in Labrador City to work at the family business but I was interested in animals, not auto parts. I have a son who is a young adult, a daughter who is in Grade 6, French Immersion, a dog, and a cat.

Personal life including pets and hobbies:
I starting working at Head for the Hills Veterinary Health Services in 2008 as a assistant and came back each summer to work while I was attending SIAST for 2 years, then became a permanent fixture as a Veterinary Technologist in 2011. I have a keen interest in small animal dentistry, feline behaviour, small animal nutrition and large animal herd health. I grew up on a grain and cattle farm near Nottingham, SK.  I became interested in Veterinary Medicine at a young age, growing up with animals and always wanting to help them. I began volunteering at local Veterinary Clinics in high school and realized that my passion would soon become a reality when I graduated from SIAST in 2011. I spend most of my days working but in my spare time I love going to Rider games, playing slow pitch, going for walks with my dog Missy and snuggling up with my SPCA-Saskatoon rescue cat Simba while watching TV. I have many more cats that I have rescued or taken in over the years that live out their lives as very well fed barn cats. They are good company for the horse, donkey and few cows that live in the barn.

What do you hope to bring to the table or describe great things you are doing:
I can honestly say that I still love what I do, and it has been 25 years. I find that a lot of people still do not understand what a VT does or what we are capable of doing. I am looking forward to being involved with this amazing group of people that work so hard to educate about and improve this profession.

Conference Coordinator
Kenzie Makowsky, RVT
Home Province:
Saskatchewan

Education: Veterinary Technology SIAST Kelsey Campus 1999

Work Experience:
Kenzie worked as both a volunteer and summer employee at the Saskatoon Zoo while attending Vet Tech school. She worked weekends and evenings in a small animal practice until she graduated. She continued on at that same clinic until 2002. Although she took a very “extended mat-leave” to raise her family, she never let her membership or CE lapse. She took a course in Wildlife Rehabilitation with the WRSOS in 2010 and was most recently hired on by the SAVT as the current Conference Coordinator in May of 2014.

Previous Board/Committee Experience:
While her children were small, Kenzie volunteered and held various board positions for their activities as well as organizations such as RCMP Cadet Corp. In 2010, she was ready to come back to the world of Veterinary Technology, and she volunteered as Conference Chair for 3 years.

What do you hope to bring to the table or describe great things you are doing:

Personal life including pets and hobbies:
Kenzie just may be the only Vet Tech on the planet with NO pets. She is in the process of convincing her husband (who has cat and dog allergies) that it’s a good idea to try at least try fostering some animals. In her spare time (which is limited with two school aged kids) Kenzie likes to travel, and continues to volunteer for her kids’ various activities.
